The Probation and Parole Training Program offered through the Penn State Justice and Safety Institute (JASI) has partnered with Temple University, the developer of the program’s curriculum, to create a defensive tactics course to meet the training requirements of all Pennsylvania’s county probation and parole officers. The course is delivered by a cadre of dedicated and highly experienced part-time instructors, consisting of active and retired law enforcement professionals, in consultation with the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD).
Defensive Tactics Training
The Defensive Tactics Training course for county probation and parole officers includes 40 hours of classroom and physical hands-on training experiences for new officers, in addition to annual instructor updates to meet the changing demands for the safety of all officers across the commonwealth. Topics include proper application and removal of handcuffs, conducting a safe systematic search, proper use of an impact weapon, proper use of oleoresin capsicum (OC), and discussing/understanding use of force.
Note: Officers whose primary assigned duties are in the juvenile probation field will not be considered for this training, unless a waiver is granted by PCCD.
I feel better prepared and excited for more training! Instructors were knowledgeable and fun, and they cared about us versus just being there for a paycheck. It was very much appreciated.
Awesome training with lots of good content and practice. Instructors were incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, and they made training fun, too!
I liked the ‘chain learning’ approach where we focus on one step at a time.
