JASI works with the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) to provide sheriff and deputy sheriff training several times throughout the year.

Basic training is required of all law enforcement officers who wish to serve as a sheriff or deputy sheriff in Pennsylvania. This 19-week resident program covers topics mandated by the Commonwealth. Only sworn sheriffs or deputy sheriffs may participate in this program. You can view a current list of these topics and upcoming training information at the PCCD basic training website.

Waiver training is a two-week course available to select, experienced members of the law enforcement community. Only sworn sheriffs or deputy sheriffs may participate in this program. More information about the selection criteria and course work can be found on the PCCD waiver training website.

Merit courses are offered in the spring, summer, and fall. JASI provides handgun and shotgun instructor certification, patrol rifle instructor certification, and re-certification for both courses. Successful completion of these courses will be recorded on a deputy’s academic record and reflected on their academic transcripts. Instruction for non-deputized officers not affiliated with a sheriff’s office may be made available if space permits. Visit the PCCD merit course website for more information.
