Course Description
Move beyond traditional classroom training and checkbox instructions, learning to build a measurable field training program that develops supervisors through progressive phases of instruction, coaching, evaluation, practical application, and documented performance. Train the next generation of supervisors who can make sound decisions, manage personnel, oversee operations, document performance, and translate agency policy and values into effective street-level leadership.
Whether your agency has a large command structure or operates with a small number of sworn personnel, SFTEP is designed to help you build a supervisor development system that reflects your agency’s staffing, resources, responsibilities, and liability profile.
Learning Outcomes
Over three days, you’ll build the essential components of a comprehensive sergeant field training program. The course begins by redefining the first-line supervisor’s role—from individual contributor to coach and organizational leader—and progresses through job task analysis, program design, phase development, evaluation documents, Behavior Anchored Rating Scales (BARS), and practical decision-making models.
You’ll also learn to integrate the OODA Loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) and SARA Model (Scanning, Analysis, Response, Assessment) into supervisory decision-making and develop realistic, phase-appropriate scenarios that challenge new sergeants to manage ambiguity, competing priorities, constitutional requirements, personnel issues, operational risks, and critical incidents. The course concludes with a capstone activity that brings the entire program framework together.
