Course Description
The Police Executive Development (POLEX) program is a comprehensive 10-day training course designed to equip new and experienced police commanders with the essential skills and knowledge needed to excel in their roles.
POLEX provides a problem-based approach to leadership development, focusing on real-world challenges and practical solutions. Participants will explore topics such as:
- Leadership — Applying effective leadership models to critical incidents and building high-performing teams
- Policy — Developing and implementing sound policies to address emerging issues
- Internal Affairs — Understanding the command function for internal affairs and staying up-to-date on the latest case law
- Recruitment and Retention — Addressing challenges related to attracting and retaining qualified officers
- Public Relations and Social Media — Effectively managing public perception and utilizing social media for communication and crisis management
- Budgeting — Planning and managing budgets to ensure efficient and effective use of resources
By participating in POLEX, commanders will gain valuable insights, develop essential skills, and build a strong network of peers. The program’s collaborative environment fosters shared learning and encourages the development of innovative solutions to common challenges.
Prerequisites: 2 years of supervisory experience; completion of at least one Penn State supervisory course (POSIT, High Impact Supervision).
